We’ve always had Mustangs. Literally every old imported muscle car in the country is a Mustang, it’s tedious as hell. But now we have the new one too!

We’ve had a spattering of the newer ones. It costs an arm and a leg to import one, but enough people are sold on the idea of cheap horsepower with questionable build quality that they will spend a king’s ransom to live that dream, so you see them every so often on the roads.

But that’s the way of the past. I suspect those people are very upset now, as they can probably no longer pass on the import premium they paid upon resale lest it push the price past that of a brand new one.

But I for one welcome our new Mustang overlords. They’re great looking cars, they come in some nice colors, and the recent Falcons have been little more than facelift upon facelift. It’s also great to finally see some coupes out there, the poor Monaro died a sad death.

This has been another edition of Tales From Down Under. If anyone’s seen or heard from Pip Bip pls holler out :(

Breaking: Number of accidents involving cars crashing into people up by 400% in Australia.

The same was always happening over here in Europe. But I’m very glad for the new Mustang, because the new Mustang seems to be way better than most of its predecessors. I’m just sad that they cost that much in V8 form, starting around €100k here in the Netherlands.

Last thing I heard EL_ULY had contact with Pip Bip, and his home computer was broken: http://oppositelock.kinja.com/i-got-word-fro…

It seems to be well priced here. I guess they knew they were replacing cheap locally-built cars, so they had to match the price or not even bother.

It certainly seems better than the predecessors. It’s been reviewed better to IIRC.

Oh that’s good news :)

They’re priced that high here due to emission based taxes. Nothing Ford can do, other than make them emit less. The Boostang costs about half of the GT as a result.

Manual Mustang GT: €35k for the car + €7k VAT + €73k CO2 tax = €115k.

Manual Boostang: €31k for the car + €6.5k VAT + €15.5k CO2 tax = €53k

Oh that’s a shame, fair enough. Hey at least they’ve got the Boostang. Suddenly it looks like a pretty good deal!

They probably planned it that way I guess. They knew it was to be a worldwide car, so even though Americans couldn’t stomach a 4-cylinder Mustang, they knew it would be appreciated elsewhere.

The high price over here is fully due to emission taxes, which is why the difference with the ecoboost is huge, since that one starts somewhere around €50k.

Well, good news is relative in this case right, cause I’m really missing his efforts in keeping Oppo alive when the Americans are sleeping and me and the other Europeans are just getting up. He also has a really good taste for obscure cars.

“We’ve had a spattering of the newer ones”

I thought you weren’t allowed register lhd cars until they’re so many years old (25?)?

That’s why it costs a fortune to import them. You need to get them converted. I’m sure those who do are filled with regret once they see the quality of the car they’ve purchased for >$100k.

Here ’s a list of cars for sale if you’re curious. There are quite a lot total, but you only see them pretty rarely. Those with the Shelbys are lucky, they can still ask for a huge sum. Those who imported a V6 are out of luck.

I agree, Oppo mourns his absence. But at least nothing’s happened to him.

There’s 3 main ways of importing personal cars into Australia,

Either the vehicle is personally owned for 12 months (and used, you can’t just buy a car and store it for a year OS)

It was manufactured before 1989

or it’s on the SEVS register, which is a list of vehicles that meet certain requirements and standards and have been deemed eligible for import. The Mustangs fall under this one, So do Skylines and Nissan ElGrand’s.
One of the requirements seems to be that it cannot be fundamentally the same care as something already sold here by the manufactures.. This means no Altezza Gita wagons, no Evo wagons, no Turbo MR2's etc unless they come in via the personal import rule above.

People think that ~400hp for >$100k is ‘cheap horsepower’?

Isn't that like used Porsche money?

I was making a funny. The point of the Mustang has always been that it’s cheap horsepower - a V8 and not much else. Paying a ton of money for a car like that is very silly, that was my point.

Here it’s more about the prestige of the Mustang brand, which is also a bit crazy. Chevrolet has the same prestige - people know they make the Corvette, nobody hears about the economy cars.

We did. We sent it as a Pontiac, nobody bought it. We sent it as a Chevrolet, nobody bought it!

Are Holden Commodore->Chevrolet SS conversions popular there? Because that would be hilarious, given the the opposite being true here.

That makes so much more sense now because all that I’ve seen in Oz are RHD. I thought it was a conversion specialist offering a good fee to convert and make them more suitable for driving in Oz.

I never realised Oz didn’t allow LHD cars.

America didn’t!? What’s with that?

I am aware of this. Seems it was overpriced and very few were sold.

Also...the styling of that thing is so...wonky...

A lot of people put Chrevrolet badges on Commodores - does that count as a conversion?

I’m not sure what you mean exactly, they’re the same car!

More or less. Adding Holden badges is semi common in the states. It's even a factory option/accessory.

Oh I have heard about that. Very dumb. But half the mods you can do are just as silly, personalization things.

Holden is little (if any) more than “Chevrolet Australia”
